Share this article Share This week, following the litany of reports of abuse at supposedly respectable schools, Ray McGovern, a headmaster and leader of the Boarding Schools Association, used his annual keynote address to apologise for the damage done by these institutions over the years to British children. Those of us sent away to school to suffer years of homesickness, psychological torture, bullying and sexual abuse, are obviously pleased that at last the penny has dropped.
But it is scandalous that the apology has taken so long. Two years ago, I wrote in the Mail of my experience of being sent to board, aged seven, at Hillstone School, Great Malvern in Worcestershire.

When people think of domestic violence, we tend to think about physical damage. Sometimes we forget that it is so much more than that. Many victims end up scarred for life. We met when one day she reached out to me through an email, and I realized we went to the same school. She told me her story before we even met in person, while we were talking about our pasts. And they keep wronging you and it only gets worse with time.
Some people break free. I justified everything that happened, to everyone else. But it was like an emotional roller coaster.

Protecting children from abuse and neglect is a community responsibility. Most adults want to help but are unsure of how to get involved. If you think a child is being abused or neglected, you should report it as soon as you become aware of it.
Signs of child abuse or neglect may vary based on the type. Here are some common signs: Teen dating abuse may be physical, sexual, financial, verbal or emotional in nature. While abuse often occurs as a pattern of controlling behavior, a single episode of abuse is cause for concern. It is important for parent s to know whom your teens are dating and to talk with them about healthy relationships.
